A play by Nora and Delia Ephron
Based on the book of the same name by Ilene Beckerman
Directed by Meredith Jacobs
A show about matters of the heart and matters of the closet
The play is a scrapbook of stories about unfortunate prom dresses, the traumatic lighting in fitting rooms, high heels, short skirts and the existential state of having nothing to wear. Accessorizing these tales — which are mostly comic but sometimes sad or sentimental too — are the mothers who disapprove, the men who disappear, the sisters who’ve got your back and Guys, don’t worry. You may not get everything, but you’ll enjoy the show, you know these women.
The life story of a woman named Gingy is woven in and out of the other tales, it follows Gingy through three marriages, multiple motherhood and the death of a child, each turning point marked by a particular item of clothing.
Of course, what these stories are all about is how we humans go about our lives, the good times, the bad times and the badly dressed times. Every woman (and man) will recognize lines in this show because you have spoken them, you have listened to them and you have heard some of them come out of your own mouth . . . . even though you swore as a teenager you’d never say that to your child . . . . .
“Is that what your wearing?”
Funny and poignant, witty and wise!
