Based on the historical case of the last person ever to be executed for witchcraft in Britain, The Last Witch explores that dark epoch where superstition overruled common sense and fear over compassion.
In 18th century Scotland, Janet Horne lives on the fringes of society. Spirited, arrogant and stubborn, but fiercely protective of her daughter Helen, Janet seems able to turn nature to her will. Her neighbours fear and admire her in equal measure as she uses her “powers” as both a salve and a weapon.
Her skills attract the wrong kind of attention from the men in her sphere – the new sheriff Captain Ross, Niall the minister and her estranged neighbour Douglas Begg. And then of course, there’s Nick, a mysterious dark stranger drawn to, or perhaps summoned by, her daughter.
But is Janet a witch or just a dirt-poor widow relying on her wits to keep herself and Helen alive? A summoner of winds and rain or a savvy charlatan manipulating her friends and foes? Or can she perhaps be both?
