British trenches. St Quentin, France. 1918.
Second Lieutenant Raleigh, fresh out of English public school and the newest officer of C Company, has arrived on the front lines to ‘do his part’ to aid the war effort. C Company is led by his old friend, Captain Stanhope, once an accomplished cricketer and now a wearied commander battling not just the Germans but his own personal demons.
Set over the four days before what would become known as the Spring Offensive, we follow Stanhope, Raleigh and Lieutenants Osbourne, Trotter and Hibbert in their gruelling ‘6 days on’ on the frontline of the First World War.
With the original 1928 production starring Sir Laurence Olivier as Captain Stanhope and the Tony awarding winning 2007 revival, Journey’s End has become the standard to which its war-drama peers are compared. More than 100 years after its first performance, Journey’s End continues to grip audiences with its portrayal of life in the trenches with all its horror, humour and humanity.
